How Are You Using Your Liminal Space?

Three months after lockdown, this is that part where the reality sets in that this self-quarantining life might take longer than we first expected last March. This is that part of beginning acceptance that we may have to live with face masks, and sanitizing wipes, and alcohol, and frequent hand-washing, and working from home (if we are fortunate to be able to!) for possibly until the end of this year. Welcome to your liminal space. Actually, this liminal space as a daily experience has always been there since the lockdown started. It has also been in our lives from time to time. We may just haven't been fully conscious -- and comfortable -- with it before, so it's not usually spoken of. Liminal space is in-between time. It is that time where something has ended but something else new has not really yet begun. It is that waiting time, when you've done all you've could for some dream, but the outcome of all your efforts is still up in the air, uncertain, unformed. It's stairwells and elevators, empty parking lots, abandoned buildings, airport terminals, schools during breaks, and houses being built.
In Latin, "liminal" comes from "limen", which means "threshold".

This is why we have been in that liminal space since the lockdowns started, when an old way of life was already ending without our being even fully conscious of it, but a new way of life -- the "New Normal" as some people call it -- is yet to be fully created and formed. This applies to all of us collectively as well as very personally. So how have you been using your liminal space? Is it alive or dead use? Robert Greene, best-selling author of the The Art of Seduction and The 48 Laws of Power, among his many books, talks about Alive Time and Dead Time. Dead Time is the time you just let pass without doing anything new to make meaningful use of it. It is Maintenance Mode Time, where we just keep doing what we've always been doing, without bothering to examine why and just going on living in auto-pilot default. Alive Time is the time you intentionally make use of to better yourself and to create something new for yourself and your life.
Our current liminal space can be the best and ripest time for Alive Time, where we get to do what we've always wanted to do with more time now for our selves and our loved ones, and which we usually place in the back burner of our lives while we attend to work and social activities before. Have you been reflecting more about your self and your life, taking better care of yourself, and letting go of what doesn't serve your Highest Good anymore? Have you been eating healthier, drinking more water, exercising more, and engaging in deeper, more meaningfully connected conversations with others, eschewing all the superficial fluff and social niceties and going in for the heart of the matter instead? Have you been thinking about what really matters to you in Life and how you desire to proceed forward now with the rest of your life, instead of just passively waiting for the government, your employer, your colleagues, your partner, your family to decide and create it for you? In art, cooking, gardening, and all other creative pursuits, liminal space is a necessary, welcome and accepted space, as one patiently and gracefully steps back and waits for more inspiration, the right done-ness, the seed sprouting into a seedling to come forth. It's not a constraining prison one gets anxious and worries about, because one knows: it just is. Furniture is being re-arranged in the backstage, and one knows and trusts that soon, a new act to the story will unfold. So how are you using your liminal space now? Embrace it by participating in it actively and co-creatively with Alive Time. Work with the rich, dynamic energies we are all currently immersed in now. Magic is afoot.
